What do I need to bring?
For strawbale courses:
PLEASE BRING WITH YOU (if you have them):
For site:
- Work clothes to keep you warm (and dry!)
- Work boots (preferably steel toe capped) - let us know if you will have a problem with this... we have a number of boots of different sizes that you may be able to borrow.
- Long sleeved shirt (straw can be prickly)
- Hat and sun cream
- Water proof clothing
- Work gloves
- Tape measure (important)
- Lump hammer and claw hammer
- Sharp knife eg Stanley knife (important)
- Hand saw
- Axe or bill hook
- Sharpening tools
- Paper and pencil
- Water bottle
- Safety glasses and dust mask
Power tools - if you have any of the following and it is easy for you to bring them (eg you are travelling in a car) then please do:
- Cordless drill
- Electric or petrol hedge clippers
- Electric crocodile saw
- Carpentry tools
- Sharp shears (hedging shears or similar)
For Lime courses: (possibly as per above if together with strawbale building)
PLEASE BRING WITH YOU (if you have them):
For site:
- Stout work boots
- Overalls or long sleeved top and long trousers that you don't mind getting stained with lime
- Waterproof coat and trousers that you don't mind getting lime on
- Sun hat and lotion
- A couple of pairs of marigold rubber gloves (preferably heavy duty if you can find them)
- A pair of goggles
- Paper and pencil
- Water bottle
For Clay courses:
(possibly as per above if together with strawbale building and/or lime courses)
PLEASE BRING WITH YOU (if you have them):
For site:
- Stout work boots, steel toe-caps if possible;
- Work clothes to keep you warm (and dry!) - preferably overalls
- Water proof clothing
- Heavy duty ‘marigold' rubber gloves or equivalent if you have them
- Paper and pencil if you wish to take notes
- Water bottle
and on some courses we would ask that participants bring
- a sample of your own subsoil to check if it is suitable for earth plastering. Just a mug's worth will be enough. Try and make sure this is dry if possible, and free from big stones
I am architect, can your courses count towards my annual CPD?
Yes, our courses are approved by RIBA Skills.
