What are the aims of the course?

Teaches straw bale building techniques from foundation to roof

What will we do during the course?

Gain practical experience of building a solid structure, customising bales and roof construction

What will we have learned by the end of the course? (learning outcomes)

  • A knowledge of the history of straw bale building and its place in contemporary design and build
  • A basic understanding of the environmental and health benefits of straw bale buildings
  • An understanding of detailing for doors and windows
  • An insight into how to buy straw bales and associated coppiced products
  • A basic practical overview of all aspects of building from floor to roof including a basic practical knowledge of carpentry skills, customising straw bales and sustainable roof construction
  • A basic knowledge of the history of lime and clay, its place in contemporary design and build
  • A basic understanding of the environmental and health benefits of using lime and clay in buildings
  • An introduction into commercially available products and locally dug lime and clay
  • Basic understanding of lime and clay terminology and quality

Please bring outdoor clothing gear and PPE equipment

Information for Participants

  • Costs per day £45/£65/£95 (unwaged/waged/£25K+ waged.) Includes lunch and refreshments
  • Courses run from 10am-4pm, arrival 9.30am
  • All courses take place at our beautiful four acre site on Gower, near Bishopston. Why not camp here overnight?  Or, during July & August, stay in one of our lovely yurts
